What is underlay?

Underlay is a sheet of material that sits beneath the flooring. Different underlays have different advantages and roles, but common uses of underlay include improving comfort and preventing moisture from forming beneath the floor. Although underlay is most commonly used under carpets, underlay is also used underneath a number of other flooring types, including wood flooring, laminate flooring, and LVT.

Why do you need underlay?

Underlay is sometimes ignored or dismissed as an optional extra, when in reality they are a key part of flooring. Underlay adds an extra depth of cushioning, which increases the lifespan of flooring as it reduces the impact of traffic. It works similarly to a shock absorber, reducing the potential for damage to occur as a result of long term low impact activities such as foot traffic, as well as higher impact incidents such as things being dropped.

As well as acting as a shock absorber, underlay also acts as a thermal and acoustic barrier. The underlay prevents heat from being lost through the flooring, which ensures heat is retained more, reducing heating bills, but also acts as an extra layer of soundproofing, preventing noise from travelling into the room from rooms below, and vice versa.

Different types of underlay

There are a number of different types of underlay available, and each comes with its own set of benefits.

Rubber underlay is commonly chosen due to its extreme comfort. Rubber is a flexible material that can be compressed and retake its original shape, making it extremely comfortable to walk over. Rubber underlay is also long lasting, and a good insulator, which helps to reduce energy bills, and some rubber underlay products are manufactured from recycled rubber to make your flooring more sustainable.

Polyurethane (PU) underlay is a foam type of underlay used in a wide range of applications. PU foam underlay is extremely popular because it is manufactured from recycled materials, making it the perfect underlay for environmentally conscious projects. Additionally, it is lightweight, easy to handle and budget friendly.

Crumb rubber underlay is a dense underlay that is manufactured from used car tiles to create another environmentally friendly underlay. It is very dense, making it perfect for areas of high traffic such as the hallway, and rooms which contain heavy furniture.

Another underlay alternative manufactured from rubber is waffle underlay. This underlay has a specific waffle pattern, which contains pockets of air to aid with comfort, insulating characteristics and durability. The waffle underlay helps to improve the lifespan of your carpet or flooring and can be used throughout the home.

As well as the above underlays, there are a number of other underlay products that have been designed for more specific applications. From underfloor heating, to LVT floors and more, there will be the perfect underlay for any flooring material. If you’re unsure which underlay suits your flooring material, don’t hesitate to get in touch for help and advice.
