What is underfloor heating?

Underfloor heating comes in two different formats – electric underfloor heating and water underfloor heating.

Electric underfloor heating systems consist of heating cables or wires that are laid across the floor in a pattern to ensure maximum coverage over the floor area. These cables emit heat when switched on, warming up the flooring above. The electric underfloor heating is covered with a layer of filler to create a smooth and level surface, before the flooring material is laid on top.

A wet underfloor heating system consists of a series of pipes that are spread across the floor. The pipes are connected to a boiler, and the pipes circulate warm water throughout the floor. The water pipes are then covered by screed, before installing the floor material above.

Electric underfloor heating systems are more suitable for smaller rooms and zones, because they are often cheaper and easier to install, but have much higher running costs. This means that wet underfloor heating systems are more suitable for larger rooms and rooms that are used regularly, because they have lower running costs.

Why install underfloor heating in your home?

Underfloor heating systems can be laid in different zones or rooms, meaning the temperature of each zone can be controlled separately. This means that heating can be used much more efficiently, and heat only the areas that are in use. Another benefit of underfloor heating is that it heats up the room quickly, and retains the heat for longer, meaning it requires less energy and less time to heat the room than more traditional radiators and heaters.

Underfloor heating systems add an extra touch of luxury that can be very appealing to potential buyers, increasing the potential selling value of the home. The feeling of a warm floor beneath your feet is something that not only improves the comfort of your home but also creates an atmosphere where the heat is evenly spread out throughout the room, instead of just being radiated from a small corner within the room, leaving parts of the room much colder than others.

Although underfloor heating is often thought of as only being suitable for use with specific flooring products, underfloor heating systems can actually be used for a wide range of flooring surfaces, including vinyl, engineered wood, slate, carpet and much more.

Another key benefit of installing underfloor heating is that it removes the need for radiators and heaters, which can take up space within the room. As buildings and apartments become more compact and space is increasingly a premium, installing underfloor heating is a great way to make the most of the room you do have, and also frees up wall space for furniture and home decorations.
